With spring in bloom it seems as though everyone is jet setting all over the world. This brings up a very important travel topic: what to pack when you are going on a trip! Do you often stand in front of your closet with an empty suitcase on the floor? Are you a pack rat who prefers to jam every item of clothing into your suitcase just in case?
Packing for a trip should be fun, not frustrating!
Whether it be for a weekend close to home or three weeks in Spain, there are essential rules to consider before you open a suitcase. These travel tips will save you from a headache, and maybe even a backache from dragging a heavy load with you.
Make your list and check it twice: Will you wear three pairs of pants on a five day trip? Really? How many shirts from that stack will you actually wear? What about those five pairs of shoes - you only have two feet! Make a list of essential items before you start packing in order to stay on track. We often recycle outfits that are the most comfortable and weather appropriate - sometimes two or three times on the same trip. Stick to the essentials and be selective. If you don't wear it for your everyday, chances are you won’t be wearing it while on a holiday either.
Work in reverse: Pack half of the clothing you were planning to take with you. Seriously! Begin with selecting a wish list of outfits but don't fold and pack them just yet. Aim to choose a few of them, starting with must-takes that make you feel good and that you are comfortable in. We recommend that you start by choosing eight outfits then try to select four of the best options along with one or two top and bottom items from the remaining outfits.
Mix it up: Set aside an entire evening to try on clothes and play mix and match with different outfits. Turn up the music or call a girlfriend over to help - whatever works! With patience and imagination, you will be surprised how many new outfits you can create from a shortlist of items. Moreover, this is the perfect time of year to determine what fits from last summer, and you might even discover important items that need to be updated or replaced since last summer.
Keep it simple: Leave out any high maintenance items such as fine silks or heavy linens that wrinkle easily. Try to stay within a neutral palette with pops of colour because it will maximize your travel wardrobe mix and match potential. Moreover, this is not the best time to pack those sparkly stilettos you've been saving for a special occasion - trust us on this one.
Watch your step: There is a golden rule for packing shoes and it is a limit of three pairs. Yes, three! This won't be a problem if you are choosing the best options such as sandals or flip flops, a walking shoe or sneaker, and one pair for dress-up. Unless your destination city is calling for heavy rain or snow, leave the boots at home and opt for a good hiking shoe that is waterproof, warm, and comfortable.
Taking the time to plan your travel wardrobe will ensure that you don't overpack or leave any essential items behind. No matter where your destination is or how long you will be there, packing with careful consideration will allow you to focus on having a good time. Plus, you get bonus points for keeping your suitcase light enough to go shopping!
