In this week’s blog, we are talking about what it means to be fashionable and how to make fashion trends work for you! Let’s get started.
In the beginning, fashion was originated by women who wanted to look and feel better. Flash forward to today and suddenly fashion trends have become less about looking better and more about looking to be seen. While there are a number of good reasons to follow fashion trends, we are focusing on the reasons not to follow them. There is logic to this, trust us!
Here are a few reasons why you should not follow fashion trends:
1. They don’t last: the main issue we have with fashion trends is that once the trend passes, you’re left with undesirable clothing that will most likely get squished - along with regret - to the back of your closet. The fact is, these items are not meant to be timeless. Your best bet is to make wardrobe choices that reflect your own personal style with your colour palette and body shape in mind. With this combination, your clothing will have a longer lifespan and will be less-likely to end up at the back of your closet. P.S. If this is happening to you then it's time to jump-start your Spring closet cleaning!
2. They are not one-size-fits-all: fashion trends generally speak to one type of body shape. How many women have you seen sporting leggings with a too-short top? Too many! Style trends have a bad habit of being inappropriate for the majority of us. Stick to trends that work for you, and don't be afraid to get creative. Find ways to adjust the trend to suit your style, shape, and age.
3. They are not about you: for decades, the fashion world broadcasts a message saying that everyone who is anyone should be in style. Falling prey to these trends will not only make you look and feel less special, they detract from your own personal style. If you consider your motive for following trends, you’ll discover that it has very little to do with your personal comfort or preference and everything to do with staying current. Simply put, when you follow the crowd, you are sacrificing your fashion identity. We believe that your well-crafted style will always be better than any passing trend!
While it’s completely acceptable to flip through the latest issue of InStyle magazine, keep in mind that these styles will fade with time, and perhaps they aren’t meant for you in the first place. Put careful consideration to your outfits and never lose sight of your own fabulous style! As always, if you are in doubt then be sure to stop into JEMS Boutique - we are always more than happy to lend our advice and steer you in the right direction!
